Tunisia is famous for its distinctive keyhole shaped, studded, wooden doors. Most often (like this one) they will actually have a smaller door cut into them for access! The heavy cast door knockers are a traditional feature. Apparently they were designed to have different sounds, so that the "wives" could distinguish between their husband returning, and a visiting stranger. (If another man came into the house, the wives had to retire to their private quarters and not be seen). | |
